Synopsis

The movie is named after The Motorist Green Book, a guidebook used by African-Americans during the Jim Crow era to find safe establishments across the U.S. where they could eat, sleep, or refuel without fear of racial discrimination. Tony Lip is hired to be Dr. Shirley’s driver and bodyguard as they travel through the Deep South for Shirley’s tour. Their journey, filled with cultural and personal clashes, eventually leads to a deep bond of mutual respect and friendship.
Themes: The film explores issues of race, privilege, and social injustice, juxtaposed with moments of humor and heartfelt connection. It also illustrates how two people from very different worlds can bridge their divides and learn from each other.

Critical Reception

Awards: Green Book won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), and Best Original Screenplay.
Praise: The performances of Mortensen and Ali, along with the film's storytelling and social commentary, were widely praised.
Criticism: The film faced criticism for simplifying complex racial dynamics and focusing more on Tony's journey than Dr. Shirley's.
