Indonesian badminton star Gregoria Mariska Tunjung has clinched a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in an unexpected turn of events. This victory, however, came with mixed emotions.

Gregoria, ranked eighth in the world, was slated to compete against Carolina Marin of Spain for the bronze after losing to world number one An Se-young in the semifinals. Unfortunately, Marin's withdrawal due to a knee injury awarded Gregoria the medal by default.

Reflecting on the situation, Gregoria shared her conflicted feelings, as she said she was stretching when she heard about Marin's injury, and it was difficult for her to feel happy under someone else's misfortune. However, she is grateful for the medal, but it's not that 'happy'. Despite the unconventional win, this bronze represents Indonesia's first medal at the Paris Olympics and the first for Indonesian women's singles since Maria Kristin's bronze in 2008.

Herli Djaenudin, Gregoria's coach, highlighted the collective effort that contributed to this achievement. Indonesian Olympic Committee Chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari and Chef de Mission Anindya Bakrie also expressed their pride and joy at the country's first medal of the games while sympathizing with Marin's unfortunate injury. "We regret Marin's injury and wish her a speedy recovery. We look forward to the medal ceremony tomorrow," said Bakrie.

Carolina Marin, a favorite for the title, was leading her match against China's He Bingjiao when she suffered a right knee injury. After an attempt to continue, she ultimately withdrew, ensuring He's place in the final against An Se-young.

While Gregoria's bronze win might not have been in the most celebratory circumstances, it still marks a significant achievement for Indonesia. The nation's badminton legacy remains strong despite recent challenges. Gregoria's medal is a testament to her hard work and resilience, even in the face of unexpected events.
